And rightfully so. Either they all learn to make stuff that doesn't blow, or make way to others.

I mean, how come Apple can produce a computer (cellphone, tablet) that's both sexy and performant, while others cannot. Are they from another freaking planet maybe? Or is it that Dell / HP / you name it just want to sell us low quality chinese plastic for a helluva fortune?

To quote from a HN discussion on this same thing:

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2835032

why let facts/data ruin a good narrative -- "google is lying to us":

Another data point that highlights the discrepancy between the incredible
device activation numbers claimed by Google and actual real-world usage
of mobile devices. Example: Flickr’s stats on popular camera phones.
Where are these Android phones? How many of them are used for little
more than phone calls and texting?

http://www.flickr.com/cameras/apple/ ... http://www.flickr.com/cameras/htc/

if you just add up current top 4 models from one (of top 5) android manufacturer, you get 5+ million photos, half the number uploaded by iphone4 (the four models have been on the market roughly the same amount of time as iphone4).

I completely disagree; these are entry-level smartphones, but that does not mean they aren't being used as smartphones. Google is counting them and so are the individuals who are buying them -- they're downloading apps and using these apps, so why do you have a problem with Google's counting them?

These numbers that Google touts are laughable. It's like the sign over the McDonald's: "Billions Sold". Who cares? I wouldn't eat there if it said "Googleplexes Sold". They're still not appetizing. Ditto for Android!

While I can clearly see the argument this is just a theory. It perhaps might be worth considering the data usage statistics for platforms as a whole. I haven't seen any particularly recent ones so I'm not going to argue this as up to date and completely factual at the moment.

The point I would like to suggest for consideration is that I do recall over the last few years seeing a lot of statistics (and complaints from carriers) where iOS users were hammering their 3g services across the world and iOS users had a several times higher typical data usage compared to Android users.

Here in the UK this got to the point that carriers stopped providing unlimited data plans for iPhones (with the exception of 3), while they currently still sell unlimited data plans for even high end Android devices and include tethering in many of the plans at a lower cost (for a comparable priced phone) than lower end iPhone contracts. There is still an element of what people are prepared to pay but if these Android users suddenly started using a lot of data, they would without doubt modify the plans.

This would seem to me to be a reasonable place to look at evidence for the comparable usage of certain aspects of the smart device across the platforms as a whole. If iOS data usage is still massively higher than that of Android, it would be reasonable to argue that many users are not really using the smart features of the device to the same extent.

No. It's not 99% of all Android users that I called "zombies", it's 99% of Android users who have bought an Android for 1$ with 1 or 2 year contracts, the phone being made by ZTE, HUAWEI, etc. Nice try, anyway!
